Companies everywhere are downsizing and, as a result, more and more companies are finding that in order to survive these unfortunate times, they have to cut creative staff, like writers. But their loss is your gain. Now, there are exceptional opportunities for new freelance writers.

I want a freelance writing side hustle. How do I get started?
Before you jump into a freelance writing side hustle, you should take a look at your background and interests to discover what kind of freelance writing you want to do. You’ll need an interest in writing, writing skills and the ability to sell yourself. You’ll also need top-notch customer service and project management skills.
Here are 3 things you’ll need to get started:
(1) Web site
Yahoo!, Godaddy and Web.com all have easy-to-use content management systems that will have you up and running with your new Web site for as little as $5 bucks a month. It’s as simple as choosing a template and adding some text. The packages usually include a domain name and e-mail accounts, but check with each vendor for details.
(2) Business Cards
To get started, you don’t need anything fancy. Basic business cards with your contact information will do. You can get some decent ones at reasonable price from online vendors, like vistaprint.com
(3) Marketing Plan
Again, nothing fancy here either. I’m a believer in starting simply but with a plan. After all, as your side hustle grows, you can always make changes to the plan. Your first plan should answer five basic questions:
- What is my product or service?
- What’s my unique selling proposition?
(What is different about my product or service) - Who will buy product or service?
- How will I find them?
- How will I get my product/service to them?
